Surgical:

The treatment of such conditions depends upon the location and complexity of the Fistula that a person is suffering from. One may be required to go through surgery if non-surgical treatments are not available, depending on the severity of the condition. Some of these procedures are:

Ligation of the Intersphincetric Fistula Tract:

Also known as LIFT, it is a two-stage procedure for the treatment of more complex and deep fistulas. The surgeon places a silk or latex string into the fistula tunnel to widen it over time during the procedure. After a few weeks, the surgeon removes the tissues that are infected and closes the opening of the internal fistula.

Fistulotomy:

In the surgical procedure, the surgeon cuts the internal opening of the fistula, scrapes and flushes the infected tissue out and then flattens and stitches the tunnel in its place.

Endorectal Advancement Flap:

In this procedure, the surgeon creates a flap from the rectal wall before removing the internal opening of the fistula. It is later used to cover the repair. In comparison to the fistulotomy procedure, this one can reduce the number of sphincter muscle cuts.
